Lot Essay

The original painting by Adriaen van der Werff (Dutch, 1659-1722) was formerly in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. During the Second World War the painting was moved to the Ministry for War in Berlin where it was destroyed.

Painted in 1712 the work had been in Dresden since before 1753 and prior to that had been purchased directly from the artist by Count Czernin for his collection in Prague.

See Works of Art from the Margaret Cadman Collection, Christie's, London, 20 November 2002, lot 401 for a smaller German plaque of this same subject.
