Charles Barriat was active at Sèvres from 1848 to 1883 and was known for his flower and figure painting. For a vase of the same form and spirit, Exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, compare The Illustrated Exhibitor, a tribute to the World's Industrial Jubilee ..., London, 1851, p. 230 and The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue: The Industry of All Nations, London, 1851, p. 172. Here described as an object 'in the highest degree meritorious'.
