Lot Essay

This whimsical and finely executed autograph fan, commissioned in 1907, is one of the best examples of its kind. The tradition of autograph fan painting was a local artistic phenomena largely confined to Bavaria as testified to by the twelve Munich born painters featured in the various panels. Popular among wealthy tourists at the turn of the century these works provided a unique 'visual memento.' The collaboration among this group of Munich based painters holds strong parallels with the Victorian 'Art Clubs' of the same period that were flourished in England.
