Lot Essay

In 1821 and '24, Dutch traders imported camels to Japan and they became a popular attraction at fairs, markets and for entertainment. They reputedly brought luck and were a sought after symbolic theme together with the figures of Dutchmen. The Imari and Kamayama-yaki kilns in Nagasaki frequently used this subjectmatter for Arita porcelain.
