Lot Essay

It is far more usual for tiger pillows of this type to be painted in orange and dark brown rather than the unusual and elegant use of the white slip ground of the present pillow. Several examples of the former type, all similarly dated 12th-13th century, are illustrated in Chinese Ceramic Pillows from Yeung Wing Tak Collection, The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, 1984, nos. 80-5.
