Lot Essay

In 1687 the stone mason Deschamps enclosed the Parterre du Midi by low retaining walls to the north, east and west. The Royal goldsmith Claude Ballin (b.1615-d.1678) produced six vases for the northern wall, different in design from those already made for the Parterre du Nord, with handles featuring Janus heads, dragons, chimaeras, satyrs, sphinxes and lion heads.
