Including two extra leaves, the top with D-shaped ends and a moulded edge, on cabochon and turned, fluted tapered legs terminating in brass caps and castors, winding mechanism part detached, the winding mechanism bearing two oval plates 'JOSEPH FITTER, CHEAPSIDE, BIRMINGHAM, LATE SAMUEL HAWKINS', some castors stamped indistinctly 'WTY...T'

Lot Essay

Joseph Fitter(b.1842) traded as a Birmingham machinist and applied for a 'British pattern' for an extending dining-table in 1861.He is known to have been trading from 210 Cheapside in 1870. Samuel Hawkins had taken out a patent number 1430 for a table winding mechanism on June 6th 1861.
