Each with a paper-scroll toprail above a solid vase-shaped splat flanked by serpentine stiles, the padded drop-in seat covered in 18th/19th century gros and petit point needlework of figures, the apron centred by a shell, on cabriole legs headed by shells and claw feet, one chair incised 'VIIII', the other 'IIII', one back leg replaced

Lot Essay

The vase-splatted parlour chairs, with serpentine legs embellished with Venus shells and terminating in Jupiter's eagle claw feet, are designed in the George II 'antique' manner.

A chair of the same design is illustrated in M. Harris, The English Chair, 1937, p. 96, pl. XXVIB and a pair was sold at Christie's, London, 30 October 1969, lot 35.
