The shaped circular tilt-top with moulded edge, on a hexagonal acanthus-carved baluster column, on cabriole legs carved with acanthus and paw feet, with printed paper label 'EXHIBITED 8TH ANTIQUE DEALERS' FAIR JUNE, 1948' and with inventory label 'MD3025L', previously with casters

Bought by the present owner's mother from M. Darling Ltd., Washington D.C., 16 February 1979 and by descent.

Lot Essay

The scalloped top of this tripod table relates to claw tables illustrated in A Society of Upholsterers' Genteel Houshold Furniture in the Present Taste, 2nd ed., circa 1765 (pl 38 from Part II) and William Ince and John Mayhew's The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. XIII. The column relates to pedestals for sundials published in James Gibbs' Book of Architecture, 1728, pls 148 & 149.
