Lot Essay

This pier glass relates to two designs by William Jones issued in his The Gentleman or Builder's Companion, 1739 (pl. 43). The ribbon-tied laurel frieze appears on an overmantel and chimneypiece in Abraham Swan's The British Architect, 1745, pl. LI (see E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1990, pp. 323 & 364).
A related gilt pier glass, with scrolled pediment, was probably that supplied in June 1738 to Lady Leigh for Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire by John Pardoe. It was described as 'a Neat Carv'd & Gold Chimny Glass - £4 4s 0d' and came with 'a pr. of brass armes to Do. 12s 0d'. It was sold from Stoneleigh, Christie's house sale, 15-16 October 1981, lot 106.
