Lot Essay

This elegant serpentined Pembroke table has stop-fluted columnar legs that are headed by medallion paterae that wrap around the rounded corners. The latter feature, together with the entrelac collar, feature on a set of 'Cabriole Chairs' chairs supplied to Richard Myddelton (1726-1795) by the celebrated Soho firm of John Mayhew and William Ince in the 1770s (three of the Chirk chairs were sold from Chirk Castle, Christie's house sale, 21 June 2004, lots 50 and 51).
