The fashion for such colorful Roman medallions depicting emblematical female figures was popular around 1780, and features in engravings published in 1788 in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers Guide, and in Thomas Shearer's London Book of Prices.

A pair of corner cupboards exhibit closely related figural panels painted on a rosewood ground within a satinwood surround (the reverse of the present veneers). The cupboards, one of the earliest acquisitions by Viscount Leverhulme, are discussed in L. Wood, A Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, no. 32, pp. 260-263. Corner cupboards were often made to be en suite with commodes.
