Lot Essay

This chair was originally fitted with a folding bed such as that made by Morgan & Sanders sold from L'Univers de Madeleine Castaing, Sotheby's, Paris, 30 September & 1 October 2004, lot 280. A Regency metamorphic bergere bed with fold-out slatted frame was sold by Axel Vervoordt, Kasteel van's-Gravenwezel, Christie's house sale, 10-12 May 2004, lot 649. A caned bergere bed by Edward Argles of Catherine Street, Strand is illustrated in N. Brawer, British Campaign Furniture, Elegance under Canvas, 1740-1914, New York, 2001, p. 162, figs. D8-11.
