The design corresponds to patterns for 'Candle Stands' published in Thomas Chippendale's The Director, 1762, pl. CXLVI. Musgrave, 'The Holt, Upham: Hampshire Home of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Leavett-Shenley', The Connoisseur, June 1962).
