Lot Essay

These unusual japanned screens correspond to a Gillows design dated 1791 for 'A satin wood Japan'd tripod fires screen' as illustrated in R. Fastnedge, Sheraton Furniture, Woodbridge, 1962, p. 186, fig. 58. The pattern is accompanied by an itemised estimate sheet including entries for 'Making by Saml Cooper' and 'Japaning of Thos Hutton'.
