Représenté debout sur une base, la main droite relevée et tenant à l'origine une lance, la gauche maintenant la ceinture, vêtu d'une robe recouvrant partiellement sa cuirasse, le visage sévère, les traits marqués par de fines lignes en relief, le menton percé d'un trou d'où pendait une barbiche, coiffé d'un bonnet ; traces de polychromie verte, rouge et or ; manque visible à la base

Compare the current cast-iron figure with two heads of Taoist deities illustrated in R.Y. Lefebvre d'Argencé, The Avery Brundage Collection Asian Art Museum of San Francisco - Chinese, Korean and Japanese Sculpture, Kodansha International ltd., Tokyo, New York and San Francisco, 1974, pp.312-313, pls.165 and 166.
On both heads like on the present lot, the use of raised lines to describe facial features is characteristic of Ming production of cast- iron figures.
