En forme de vase gu à décor archaïsant et divisé en huit lobes, le pavillon et le pied ornés de motifs de cigales, séparés par une partie centrale en relief sculptée de masques de taotie sur fond de leiwen, l'anse en forme d'animal mythique à tête de lion agrippé à la bordure, le corps rattaché à la partie centrale par des volutes géométriques, deux chilong au corps noueux grimpant sur la partie supérieure avant du vase

Lot Essay

This type of rhinoceros libation cup in shape of archaistic beaker vase is very unusual. For a comparable example see another cup with a more classical handle in the Gerard Lévy Collection, illustrated in Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, London 1999, p.151, pl.182 ; see also a vase without handle illustrated p.152, pl.183.
Although the carving of the handle on the current example is very unusual and refine, it can be related to another cup illustrated in Thomas Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Hong Kong 1999, pl.13
