Lot Essay
No other Yongzheng vase of this shape, large size and with this guan-type glaze appears to be published. The vessel presented here is a very rare example.
As discussed in the catalogue note of lot 118 of the present catalogue, the Hu shape of this vase is inspired from archaic bronzes and the very nice crackled guan-type glaze also from the early Song dynasty stonewares.
Smaller and later Hu vases from the Qianlong period, with a ru type glaze but decorated with relief ram's heads are the closest examples : one was sold in these Rooms, 15 June 2005, lot 227 ; another one is illustrated in National Palace Museum, 'Special Exhibition of Ch'ing Dynasty Monochrome-glaze Porcelain', Taipei 1981, Catalogue, no.88
