ELIOT, T. S. (1888-1965). Typed letter signed ('Tom') to Ottoline Morrell, Faber and Faber Ltd headed notepaper, 24 May [1935], one page, 8vo; with envelope with impressed black wax seal; concerning her friend the Irish writer James Stephens (1882-1950), whom Eliot had met at one of her Thursday tea parties. Knowing that Stephens could be embarrassingly garrulous, Eliot writes, 'He seemed so very subdued that I wondered whether he had not had some misfortune', and reports that he believes Stephens 'cares deeply about poetry', continuing 'I wish that I did not dislike his wife etc.' In a postscript he mentions that he has written to Yeats, to whom Morrell had re-introduced him.
