Greene wrote to Ottoline Morrell complaining that his new novel had 'been out nearly three weeks and has received only three reviews ... "The Sunday Times" seems to have abandoned me ... Books are a labour to write and hell to publish; why does one do it?' Morrell replied with generous praise, which was much appreciated (Sherry, Life of Graham Greene, I, p.466).
