FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 590 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON TITLE, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on front blank: 'To Julian from her peculiar old friend' with the author's monogram, and dated '(Jan. 24. 1928. was the date when this book should have been presented)', with cutout of golden fish pasted down. Authorial ink deletion from 'Grandeur of Ghosts'. Pencil note beneath 'To an Old Lady Dead' reading 'To Harriette Morrell' (Philip's mother).
In November 1924, Ottoline Morrell took Sassoon to tea at Black Hall, Oxford, to meet her mother-in-law, Harriette Morrell, who died the following week, on 9th November. She then took Sassoon to view the body laid out, which inspired him to write the poem, 'To an Old Lady Dead'.
