Details
SPENCER, Gilbert (1892-1979). [Portrait of Siegfried Sassoon], in pencil on paper, 355 x 257mm.

Gilbert Spencer, brother of Stanley Spencer, first met Ottoline Morrell in London, at his exhibition held at the Goupil Gallery in 1923. Ottoline supported Spencer by giving him 'tap and enter' rights at Garsington Manor (ODNB) and arranging lodgings for him nearby, so that he came into contact with members of the Bloomsbury set and many notable artists and writers. The present bust-length portrait of Sassoon was drawn at Garsington in 1920/1. Spencer's paintings from this period include 'Trees at Garsington' (Ashmolean), and 'Garsington Roofs'. Ottoline's view of Spencer is seen in her letter to Mark Gertler (included in lot 98), 'What an odd fish Gilbert is -- I don't know what he is made of'.
