STEPHENS, James. Autograph letter signed to Ottoline Morrell, Woodstown, Co. Waterford, Ireland, 8 December 1936, 2 pages, 4to, recalling her salons in Bedford Square, mentioning Duncan Grant, Clive Bell and Lytton Strachey, and adding 'new life, the nicer part of it, began for me there'. Summing up the mood of those evenings, he compliments her not only on the 'rooms, the colour, the special smell, the peculiar glamour which belonged to youth', but on her 'genius for giving people to themselves and each other'; with another autograph letter signed to Ottoline Morrell, 28 Queens Walk, NW9, 15 March 1932, 2 pages, 8vo, commiserating with her for a long period of bad times and thanking her for her support: 'You have made life seem to me fuller, and kinder and braver than it had before seemed, and I send you all my applause and affection'. Signed off with an anthropomorphic flourish. With envelope addressed to Sherwood Park Clinic and Spa, Tunbridge Wells.
