Provenance: pencilled inscription in Sassoon's hand on upper wrapper 'S. Sassoon 3rd Royal Welsh [sic] Fusiliers Litherland L[iver]'pool' -- Maxwell Steinhardt (his bookplate by Rockwell Kent).

FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 50 COPIES. INSCRIBED BY SASSOON WITH HIS ADDRESS AT THE R.W.F. TRAINING DEPOT, shortly after publication. Sassoon was commissioned into the Third (or Reserve) Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers in May 1915 (the colophon is dated April 1915), and travelled to the training depot at Litherland, Liverpool, where he stayed for much of the remainder of the year, until embarking in November 1915 for the Western Front, where he saw action with the First Battalion of the R.W.F. Keynes A11.
