SASSOON, Siegfried (1886-1967). Lenten Illuminations and Sight Sufficient. [N.p.]: The University Press, Cambridge for Siegfried Sassoon and Geoffrey Keynes, 1958. 4° (234 x 171mm). Title and text ornaments printed in blue. Original blue buckram backed boards [by Mansell & Co., London], titled in gilt on front board along buckram (small [?adhesive] mark on front free endpaper). Provenance: Richard de la Mare (presentation inscription on front free endpaper 'By Siegfried Sassoon Richard de la Mare from Geoffrey Keynes December 1958').
FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 35 COPIES, PRESENTATION COPY FROM KEYNES TO SASSOON'S PUBLISHER RICHARD DE LA MARE. Sassoon had approached Richard de la Mare of the publisher Faber and Gwyer (later Faber and Faber) in 1928, when he had become dissatisfied with William Heinemann, and de la Mare responded with alacrity -- particularly after seeing the first part of Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, which he realized would become a bestseller -- and Sassoon transferred to Faber, who remained his publisher, later in the year. Keynes notes that the volume was designed by John Dreyfus in consultation with Brooke Crutchley and Keynes and was published in December 1958. Keynes A60a.
