Original printed wrappers (a little darkened and marked, edges creased). Provenance: presentation inscription from Ethel Leeds to Ash on upper wrapper -- Siegfried Sassoon (monogram booklabel; loosely-inserted newspaper clipping annotated by Sassoon).
FIRST EDITION. SASSOON'S COPY of this collection of five war poems by Brooke ('Peace'; 'Safety'; 'The Dead'; 'The Dead'; 'The Soldier'). The newspaper clipping is Arnold Bennett's article 'Books and Persons', dated 30 December 1926: a passage has been marked in the margin ( '... Not yet returned are the poetic days when books like "The Excursion", "In Memoriam", "The Ring and the Book", "The Angel in the House" even "Aurora Leigh", could and did stand up sturdily against novels by no matter what idol and swell ... '), which Sassoon's annotation concisely characterizes as 'Balls!'. Keynes Brooke 28.
