'I HAVE BEEN MAKING A LITTLE M.S. FOR YOU ... the verse is scrupulously tidy ... it represents what you called my devotions -- those numerous evenings since September when I have tried to detach myself from the trivial round & discover whatever it is in my mind which is worth anything -- a sort of spiritual exercise, I suppose.' Sassoon's selection includes four apparently unpublished poems, 'Apologia', 'A Renunion', 'Not Guilty' and 'The Offering'. 'Neighbours' was published in New Poems (1958), and the remainder in The Tasking (1954); here, at least three poems ('The Tasking', 'Another Spring' and 'Two Twinklings', published as 'Retreat from Eternity') contain notable differences from their published versions. In his accompanying letter to his friend Henry Major Tomlinson (1873-1958), Sassoon writes 'blessedly undistracted by worries', on re-reading Norman Douglas, news of George, on his doubt over the enclosed poems, Edmund Blunden's gift of a map of Wiltshire and of E.M. Forster's becoming a Companion of Honour. (2)
