THE COMPLETE CHRONICLE SEQUENCE, ALL SIGNED OR INSCRIBED BY WILLIAMSON, WITH ONE OF C. 12 FIRST STATE COPIES OF THE FINAL VOLUME. This set is composed of first editions, apart from A Fox under my Cloak and The Golden Virgin (second impressions of 1962 and 1961). The final volume, The Gale of the World, is present in 2 states; the first is one of circa 1,500 which were printed before errors on p. 34 were discovered, leading to the destruction of all but some 12 copies and the second is the published state, with variant passages on pp. 34 and 123. Volumes I-XI are signed by Williamson on the half-titles (volume VII with the addition of Sassoon, T.E. Lawrence, Priestley and Shaw's names), and XII-XIV are inscribed thus: 'For Lionel Dakers friend & patron! Exeter 1968 Henry Williamson' (The Phoenix Generation); 'For Lionel Dakers, Exeter Henry Williamson' (A Solitary War); 'For Lionel Dakers ex Henry Williamson. Exeter' (Lucifer before Sunrise). The first issue of The Gale of the World is inscribed 'With friendship, for Lionel Dakers from Henry Williamson Barnstaple, 2 Jul[y] 1969', and contains an autograph postcard signed from Williamson to Dakers, 4 Capstone Place, Ilfracombe, 17 June 1969, arranging to meet with Dakers in Barnstaple so that he might give him this copy of The Gale of the World, and stating that he has seconded Dakers' application for membership of the Savage Club. Dakers had met Williamson (an author whose works he collected) through his son, Harry Williamson, who was taught by Dakers (the Organist and Master of Choristers at Exeter Cathedral), at Exeter Cathedral School, and the two men became friends, as the inscriptions in the books testify; Dakers also contributed to the Henry Williamson Society Journal.
