DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Sign of Four. London: Spencer Blackett, 1890. 8°. Half tone frontispiece by Charles Kerr, without the publisher's advertisements (some very light marginal spotting and browning). Later brown half morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments with repeated floral morif in compartments, top edges gilt, original red cloth upper wrapper and spine with "Spencer Blackett's Standard Library" at foot bound in at the end. Provenance: G. E. ?Sharland (early washed signature on recto of frontispiece). With the author's armorial bookplate tipped-in at the front. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, FIRST ISSUE, with page number "13" instead of "138" on the contents page and misprint "w shed" on p.56. De Waal 279; Green & Gibson A7(a).
