Lot Essay

Attacked whilst evacuating troops from St. Nazaire on 17th June 1940, Lancastria suffered four direct hits and sank within twenty minutes. Casualties have never been fully established but estimates vary between 2,500 and 5,000 persons. Churchill ordered a news blackout for the duration of the War, but in his memoirs conceded that her loss was the most terrible disaster in our naval history.
