Lot Essay

The steel three-masted barque Arethusa was built in 1891 by A. McMillan of Dumbarton for Mr. J.D. Clink. The Arethusa was put into the Eastern trade for a number of years before being transferred to the Australian run. Surviving until 1917, she finally fell victim to the Great War and was sunk off the coast of Ireland by a German U-boat.
