The club's first match took place on 17th June 1857 with a visit from Cobham. Playing in this match was, for Mote Park, the legendary Alfred Mynn, then a veteran of 50 years, and for Cobham, the Hon. E. and Hon. H. Bligh. The first first-class match at The Mote took place on the 23rd and 24th June 1859 when Kent entertained the M.C.C.. Kent won the match by an innings and 66 runs. In 1881 the Kent County Cricket Club played all home county games at "the Mote" because "conditions were more satisfactory there than anywhere else" (T. Osborn, "The History of the Mote Cricket Club", Kent: County Library, p.26). The highlight of the 1890 season was the match between Kent and the Australians in July, in which the visitors convincingly won. The Philadelphian XI also played at Mote against Kent in 1897, only to be defeated by the county side. Since its formation in 1857, Mote Park Cricket Club boasts an impressive list of former players, including Lord Harris, the Hon. Ivo Bligh, Colin Blythe, F.E. Woolley and A.P. Freeman.

The Rt. Hon. Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted was the founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company and was Lord Mayor of London from 1902 to 1903. For over 32 years he was the munificent landlord of the Mote Cricket Club, and bore half the cost of levelling the main ground and building the main pavillion.
