Lot Essay

After the 1932/33 "Bodyline Tour", Harold Larwood never played again for England. Asked to apologise for the way he bowled at the Australians, he refused. The above letter reflects his attitude towards the tour and his steadfast determination to support his captain, Douglas Jardine. The letter shows Larwood himself chose not to play against the Australians in 1934 - "dont you think I have done right in refusing to play against them?". The letter also reveals Larwood was willing to not only sacrifice playing for his country but also his county. He writes "you know the Australians better than I do, and I was prepared to back Mr Jardine up, even if I had to leave County Cricket".
