In 1864 George Parr's All England XI, which was visiting Victoria, were persuaded to make a brief visit to Otago and Canterbury, and teams of XXII were fielded against the tourists. The All England XI won both matches played against Otago, the first by 9 wickets and the second by an innings and 51 runs. The Cambridgeshire player, Thomas Hayward scored a total of 42 runs and took 24 wickets, 15 of which came in the first innings of the first match.
