Jan van Ravenswaay was a Hilversum painter and apprentice of the famous artist P.G. van Os (1776-1839). Like his teacher, Van Ravenswaay specialised in landscapes with cattle and war-scenes. The cossacks were a party in the 1813-1814 dispute between the French and Prussian armies, near Naarden and Hilversum
