Lot Essay

No such chairmaker is recorded in the local Trades Directories of the 19th century. These Directories were not collated as regularly as the National Census returns and it can only be assumed that Heigham made chairs in Doncaster for a short period of time between publications. Heigham's chair design, whilst broadly similar to other local chairs, is distinctive with an exaggerated rake to the back of the chair and a swept taper to the hoop where it meets the armbow. Unusually, too, Heigham has struck his name on the front seat edge as well as on the rear seat edge.
