The use of a large upper splat of this type is a very distinctive feature of chairs from this Yorkshire group, which also includes corner or 'smoking' chairs where, again, the back is fitted with an upper pierced splat. The large 'D' shaped thick seat has the back spindles passing right through in the manner of many Celtic-made chairs and the legs are tenoned and wedged through the seat. This chair is a fine example of a high status regional Windsor chair.
