The subject of this work is St. George's Hill House, Bathampton where Sickert lived from December 1938 until his death in January 1942.

Wendy Baron in her 2006 catalogue of the artist's paintings and drawings, comments, 'Catalogued at Leeds in 1942 as having been completed in November 1941. Like the late Bath townscapes it is painted very thinly in pale, washed out colours and is almost monochromatic in effect' (see W. Baron, 2006, loc. cit.)

A smaller version of the same subject was exhibited at the Hayward Gallery, Late Sickert, 1982, no. 120 and is recorded by Wendy Baron, 2006, op. cit., no. 787.1.

The present work is recorded by Dr Wendy Baron as the last picture that Sickert painted.
