Lot Essay

In the summer of 1961 the John and his wife, Myfanwy, explored the countryside around Strumble Head in Pembrokeshire, looking for somewhere to buy as a holiday home. Their search led them to a ruined cottage on the slope of Garn Fawr, they eventually bought this and another cottage, to act as the studio, and fourteen acres of land. Piper found the countryside of small fields bound by stone walls inspirational and over the following years executed many works of the views around the cottage.
