A FLIRTATIOUS LETTER FROM THE BACHELOR BUCHANAN TO A YOUNG LADY OF WASHINGTON. Waiting for a summons from President Pierce, Buchanan sends this romantic and playful letter to a young female acquaintance: "the only reason why I have not ere this answered your spicy, agreeable & interesting letter, was the confident belief that I should soon enjoy the pleasure of a tete a tete with your ladyship. On my last brief visit to Washington, although occupied day & night with business, I had twice fixed a time to pay you my willing devoirs; but on each occasion was interrupted. I expect daily to be called to Washington, & should I not arrive late in the night, I shall not sleep there without having first presented myself at your shrine. My apparent neglect has given me real pain...Farewell! until next we meet, which I hope will be very soon..."
