CLEVELAND, Grover. Six autograph letters all signed ("Grover Cleveland"), 1882-1906. Together 13 pages, 8vo, and 4to, three with original autograph envelopes.
DOG WHIPS FOR THE "LYING AND DIRTY" BLACKMAILERS. 20 April 1900 ALS to Charles E. Felton: "I have read with much interest your paper entitled 'Blackmail.' I agree with you in your suggestion of moral enforcement as a remedy; but in the present Saturnalia of lying and dirty blackmail, in the press and other quarters, I am in favor of accompanying moral suasion with long sentences, the dog whip, and fast propelling march." -- 20 October 1902 ALS to James Moore: A response to a friend's request for legal advice. Cleveland cautions him that "the opinion and advice of...an active practicing lawyer would be better than the impressions of a stale old 'has been' like me." -- 27 July 1905 ALS to Frank D. Marshall: Declines an appointment to join the board of the Thomas Brackett Reed Memorial Association, saying he does not have the time to devote to the project. -- 8 February 1906 ALS to J. Hacker Hall: He sends a check for $1,000 for "alterations and repairs upon the Remick house," which he thinks is "a very good investment." -- 25 July 1882 ALS to his Doctor (otherwise unidentified): Cleveland sends more money (this time for "forty dollars in currency"), and goes on to comment about his impending nomination for governor of N. Y. : "It looks as though quite a boom had started in favor of my candidacy for Governor. This town is full of it. It is quite improbable that so obscure a personage as I should be selected...And yet if the nomination should come in a proper shape, you may be sure I would accept it..." -- 10 November 1890 ALS to Mrs. Gillespie: Comments on the results of the 1890 mid-term elections: "Our Tariff reform friends and the Democrats did very nobly indeed all over the land...The Pennsylvania people did 'things up proud' beyond all others...They demonstrated...they could not be led by partisanship to endorse stealing and lying..." Together 6 items. (6)
