A FUTURE GREAT PRESIDENT HONORS LINCOLN. "The Life of Lincoln," the 31-year-old Roosevelt writes, "is a star to which every young American can safely hitch his wagon." 1912 was the first time Roosevelt stood for re-election, as he successfully held onto his state Senate seat in Albany. He did so, in large part, thanks to the skillful political advice he received from Louis M. Howe, the man who would go on to guide FDR's path to the White House. The first step towards that goal would come the following year, in 1913, when President Wilson brought young FDR to Washington to make him Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
