Lot Essay

An almost identical Swedish Empire console table and matching mirror bearing the label of Jonas Frisks (1787-1849) are illustrated in T. Sylvén & E.Welander-Berggren, Speglar: Spegelmakare & Fabrikörer i Sverige, Stockholm, 2000, p.129. Another is illustrated in situ at Elghammer, the home of General Curt von Stedingk (1746-18370, Swedish Ambassador in St Petersburg, Hakan Groth, Neoclassicism in the North, Swedish Furniture and Interiors, 1770-1850, London, 1990, p.172. Frisks, who was granted the right to produce mirrors from the Stockholm kommerskolledium in 1805, ran a successful workshop, first located at the Stortorget (1806-10), then at the Storkyrobrinken (1810-14), and finally at the Riddarhustorget (1814-25).
