Lot Essay

For several related chests, and a discussion of their origins and decoration, see Percy Macquoid The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed. 1954. The geometrical mouldings and bold projecting panels derive from earlier Flemish and German woodwork, and such pieces prominently feature inlaid bone and mother-of-pearl engraved with floral and animal motives.
