SAINT AUGUSTINE BLESSING, in an historiated initial P cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[northeastern Italy, c.1480s]
166 x 155mm. A ground of burnished gold around an initial with staves formed by a blue marble column, two leafy cornucopias and pink and green foliage, in the infill an enthroned bishop saint raises his hand in blessing, seated below him sixteen canons, below them a scroll inscribed 'benedictus corona fra' (losses to surface of gold ground and upper foliage terminal, staining to vellum, cut to shape). Framed.
This initial is likely to have come from a choirbook intended for use in an Augustinian establishment. The architectural elements of the initial stave and the intense colours indicate an origin in the Veneto or Lombardy.
