AN APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED VIRTUOSIC MINIATURE FOR AN UNUSUAL INSTRUMENT: the 'nail violin' in which nails placed in a semi-circular arrangement around a wooden sound board are played using a bow was invented in 1740 by Johann Wilde; Hindemith may well have seen the improved version, using two superimposed sound-chests, in the collection of the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where later in 1927, the year of this manuscript, he took up a post as professor of composition. The piece is an appealing example of Hindemith's eclecticism and sense of humour.
