'I pay with my blood for the love I bore you! Do not forget me, Leonora farewell!': Manrico's dramatic valediction from within the tower while Leonora wanders disconsolate outside and the monks sing the 'Miserere'. This seems to have been the composer's favourite quotation from the opera, and appears in a number of his album leaves for this period. Verdi's visit to London was as Italy's representative to the International Exhibition of 1862 -- for which he composed the Inno delle nazioni, although lack of rehearsal time prevented its performance as intended.
