FIRST EDITION OF BRINSLEY'S DETAILED MANUAL FOR COUNTRY SCHOOLMASTERS. Faced with the admirable vigilance of Jesuit teachers, grammar schools, particularly in 'barbarous countries', were to be Protestantism's chief hope; godliness and good behaviour were no less important than learning in a school master. A Consolation for Our Grammar Schooles, an abbreviated and more general version of Brinsley's book, appeared in 1622, and a further edition in 1627. The author had married Barbara Hall in 1598, sister of Joseph Hall (1574-1656) who contributed the commendatory preface. Curate at Kegworth, Leicestershire, in 1591, and at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, in 1601, he was master of Ashby school from 1600, owing his appointment to the third earl of Huntingdon, his principal benefactor. Lowndes I, p. 272; STC 3768.
