PLUTARCH (46?-120?). The Philosophie, commonly called, The Morals, translated from Greek by Philemon Holland (1552-1637). London: Arnold Hatfield, 1603.
2° (336 x 220mm). (Title slightly soiled, soiling on S6r, small rust hole through letters in Aa2 and Oo3, hole or tear in margin of Iii6, Zzz1, and Fffff3, Zzz3 affected by paper fault, a few leaves waterstained.) Contemporary English calf, covers with blind-roll panel bordered by fillets enclosing a lozenge and saltire cross of similar pattern (rebacked preserving old spine, some chipping and rubbing of binding details, clasps lacking). Provenance: annotations in a contemporary hand.
FIRST COMPLETE EDITION of the Moralia in English. This is a good, clean copy, enhanced by a sturdy contemporary binding, and a contemporary reader's appreciative marginalia. The heads-in-medallions roll-tool on the binding, is similar in style to Oldham, HM. g (7) 823. Holland was widely known for his extensive translations, the altar to Dulness in Pope's Dunciad was partly built out of them, and even in the 19th century he was one of the most quoted authors in what became the Oxford English Dictionary (behind only Shakespeare, Scott, Milton, Wyclif, Chaucer, Caxton and Dryden).
