ALBERTUS MAGNUS (c.1206-1280). Summa de eucharistiae sacramento. Ulm: Johann Zainer, [first half of] 1474.
Chancery 2° (303 x 215mm). Collation: [14 2-710 810(2+1) 9-1710 188 1010] (1/1 tabula, 2/3v blank, 2/4r text). 183 leaves. 35 lines and headline (foliation). Type: 1:117G. Two-sided woodcut foliate border opening text, woodcut outline initials. Printed page-by-page. (A few leaves browned, some light spotting.) Contemporary ?Austrian blindstamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, single fore-edge clasp, old title paper labels on front cover and spine, later endpapers (a little worming, part of clasp missing). Provenance: Vienna, Dominican convent (contemporary inscription on first leaf; binding) -- Dr. Ernst Kyriss (small monogram stamp).
FIRST EDITION, PRINTED AT THE FIRST PRESS AT ULM. Works by Albertus Magnus featured strongly in Zainer's printing programme. The present work was the third printed by Zainer in less than a year which were presumably intended as companion volumes; they share lay-out and open with the same elegant woodcut border, first used by Zainer for Albertus' De mysterio missae (29 May 1483). A FRESH, LARGE COPY, with a strong type-impression and some deckle edges. As the work of one of the greatest Dominican theologians, this copy was appropriately owned by the Dominicans at Vienna. Its modern owner was Dr. Ernst Kyriss, renowned scholar of Germanic Gothic bookbinding, of which the present binding is an excellent example. On the authorship, see Bod-Inc.
